3 reasons Nehemiah should have never been able to do what he did.
- The Leader was too small.
- Nehemiah was… a nobody (let me qualify)
- He was the king’s cupbearer. Yes he lived in the kings house and yes he worked for the royal family, but his job was to taste the food, and drink before the king to make sure it had no poison. He was the canary in the mine. If he died then it meant that the food or drink was not safe for the king to have. So what that meant was that Nehemiah was expendable…
- How this man, who was expendable could gain the favor of a king is a testament to his leadership. He was not ranked higher than the king but yet he used his influence to convince the king to help him.
- Nehemiah was… a nobody (let me qualify)
- The task was too big.
- Ne 1:3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
- You see Nehemiah’s burden was not just for the city of Jerusalem but also for his people. Then verse 4 tells us that he sat down and wept, mourned and fasted.
- The opposition was too great.
- The Land was in turmoil. Though the king had it under his control. Sandballat, and Tobiah, had made quite the living for themselves persecuting the remnant of the Israelites. They had amassed their own army of people, and were very antagonistic toward Israel.
By these standards alone Nehemiah should not have been able to accomplish what he did. This man unified a divided people, assembled a construction team, resisted the attacks of Sandballat, and rebuilt the city walls in 52 days. Now what I would like to do is to look at the reasons for his success.
- He had the right motivation.
- His motivation was unselfish. We can see by verse three that his burden was for others.
- His prayer revealed a lot about his true character.
- Did you know you can tell a lot about someone by how they pray. You can’t hide in your prayers. They reveal the true character of a person.
- What is your motivation? What is it that gets you out of bed in the morning?
- He had the right method
- He was a great leader, even though it did not seem that he was in a position of leadership he used what he had available to him to accomplish the task that God had called him to.
- That is all that God wants from you Christian. To use what gifts talents and resources to accomplish the task he has called you to.
- He had the right maker.
- His God was not the God of the Persians, nor was his God himself.
- His God was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The everlasting God.
- Who is yours?
